Stephens of the next f5enateas the correspondent calls him: He is a very small man and will prob ably sink the beam at say ninety odd pounds and ia height measures .5 feet 6 inches. The biggest thing about him is hb bat. It is a slouch and worn in typi cal Southern style. His hair, iron gray, U worn rather long, bat does not hang way down over the neck. He has & beard and mustache, also iron gray. His rip&t band is constantly feeling arotsatp Ha "beard ; je . 3ie talks. He stands straight and dresses well. He wears black broadcloth or a black coat and gray pants. His vest is unbuttoned all, the; way down to the last two holep. This shows a length of perfectly white linen. The collar is equally white, but not stiff, and is surrounded by a narrow black tie carelessly knotted ia front. Around his neck is hung a lung gold chain which winds in and oat thebutton holes of the vest and finally disappears in the watch-pocket. Then there are his feet. -They 'are very small. They are perhaps the narrowest belonging to any man in mis country, lie is a reaujr talker and has the bouthern accent pret ty strongly marked. Mr. Thoa. H. Johnson, who has been confined to his house by sickness for the past two weeks is, we are glad to learn, convalesent. Messrs W. O. Mnnds and Michael Cronly, Jr., who have been confined to their residences for the past six weeks with typhoid fever are rapidly im proving and are expected " out on the streets in a few days. rne Ladies' Benevolent Society. We are requested to state that the an nual meeting of the Ladies' benevolent Society will be held in Hook and Lad- der Hall, to-morrow evening, at 11 o'clock. The annual subscription is but $1 a year and it is earnestly hoped that many ladies, old as well as new members, will attend and give some substantial aid and encouragement to those who have borne the burden of this labor for so many years past. The American Union. We have private advices to the effect that the American Union Telegraph Company will probably open an office in this city next month. John Bragg, of the Charlotte Press, who is to be the Manager of the office in that city, says in his yesterday's issue: The Southern wires of the "American" will reach Charlotte in a lew days. The Northern wires will arrive by the first prox., when they will open for business and they hope to get the most of it. Their building party will soon commence the erection of the wires to Wilmington from this city over the Carolina Central R. R. The poles are all out and ready now. The Baptist State Convention meets in Goldsboro to-morrow, and the dele gates from the First Baptist Church in this city will go up to-morrow morning. The Convention will be called to order, for organization, at 11 o'clock. At 7:15 p. m., the Introductory Sermon will be preached, by Rev. F. H. Jones, of Yancey ville. The morning and after noon session of the Convention will be for business.Jand the discussion of im portant subjects. Each evening, there will be preaching, or mass meetings, and addresses by distinguished delegates and visitors. The reverend Ur. Macltae, Esq., Mr! H. B. Plant, of New jYork, was called to the Chair, and Mr. J. W. Thompson, o f this4i1y "wbtf-iuested to act af?rSee-4 retary. Messrs B. F. Newcomer and Geo. C. Jenkins were appointed, together with the Secretary, a committee to verify proxies. The committee reported 3.08G shares represented in person and 6,658 by proxy making a total of 9,744 shares. ItbeiDg ascertained that a majority of the stock was represented,the meeting was declared fully organized for business. The President read his annual report, which, on motion of Hon. C. II. Brog den, was accepted and approvtu. The reports of the Superintendent Treasurer and Auditor were submitted, but on motion of D. MacEae, Esq., their readiDg was dispensed with. Col. J. W. Atkinson, on behalf of the Auditing Committee, read the report of that committee, which, on motion, was received and ordered published with the proceedings of the meeting.' A proposition on the part of citizens of Halifax county, having been made to the Company to furnish cross-ties and the right of way and dothe grading for a branch road from the town of Halifax to Clarksville, in that county, if the Company would complete the proposed road, the matter, on motion of Mr. B. F. Newcomer, was referred to the Boar of Directors, with power to act. An application to lease old rails for the purpose of building a temporary track to haul timber, was likewise refer-, red to the Board of Directors with power to act. Col. J. W. Atkinson then nominated Hon. R. R. Bridgers for reelection to the office of President and moved that a ballot be dispensed with, which was carried and Col. Bridgers was thereupon unanimous ly reelected. Messrs. Thos. C. Jenkins, W. T. Wal ters, B. F. Newcomer and S. M Shoe maker, of Baltimore; H. B. Plant, of New York; A. J. DeRosset and D. Mac- j Rae, of Wilmington; Geo. loward, of Tarboro; E. B. Borden, of Goldsboro; and W, H. Willard, ef Raleigh, were elected a Board of Directors for the ensuing year. . Messrs. J. W. Atkinson, D.Branch and D. G. Worth were appointed Audit ing Committee for the same term.
